Dear Creator,

Thank you for signing up for the Rare Femslash Exchange! I am excited to receive your gift, and I hope you get one you love in return.

The most important thing I want you to know is I'm pretty easy osy, so though I've written ideas here if they don't do it for you please ignore them.

I would prefer canon settings for the fandoms in this exchange, but there's no need to tie anything to actual events. Most of the pairings don't interact in canon at all. For Original Works, I have some preferences outlined, but again I'm fairly open to most things.

🖤Treats are welcome in all forms, and I intend to give some too if I have the time and inspiration. If there are any pinch hits with fandoms I'm familiar with, I'll try to fill them as well.🖤

LIKES

Genres:

  • apocafic
  • DITL
  • missing scenes
  • firsts (date, kiss, time)
  • established relationship fluff
  • any other kind of fluff
  • H/C
  • whump
  • darkfic
  • epistolary

Tropes:

  • hypothermia
  • there was only one bed
  • fake dating
  • mutual pining
  • idiots to lovers
  • bad at communication

Other: I prefer sex scenes to lean M rather than E (where the reader is watching from the other side of the room rather than being squished in between the characters) // please also note that sex is not necessary if that is not your thing, I adore fics without and very few of the things I've written have been PWP // asexual characters/pairings are also fine  if that's your thing

DNW

  • Miscarriage/Child Death/Pregnancy/Kid Fic
  • Scat/Watersports/etc
  • Cheating/Breakups
  • Omegaverse
  • Partner abuse
  • Rape or Child Abuse on screen (discussion about or reference to past experiences is totally fine, I enjoy angst and healing)
  • Character Bashing

I will leave the pairings in your capable hands, however just in case you would like some inspiration, I'll write some of the things on my mind for each of them. Again, absolutely no expectations that you'll run with any of these, just ideas if you want them because some of these pairings have zero or minimal interaction in canon and I don't want you to feel adrift at sea.

Fallout 3

  • Lana Danvers/Janice Kaplinski - shy, botanist Janice is a little flustered when strong, confident,  security guard Lana starts flirting with her on her rounds.
  • Bittercup/Female Lone Wanderer - two lonely and misunderstood young women rage against an unfair world.
  • Female Lone Wanderer/Lana Danvers - when the Lone Wanderer visits Rivet City, she ends up in the Muddy Rudder, where a forlorn Lana is drowning her sorrows.
  • Moira Brown/Female Lone Wanderer - an accident in Moira's workshop leads to some TLC.
  • Moira Brown/Nova - Nova takes a shine to an awkward Moira when she starts visiting the saloon in the evenings. Slow burn.
  • Nova/Jenny Stahl - they start to get close after hours, maybe sharing a drink and a cigarette, both of them have a difficult history with the men in Megaton.
  • Female Lone Wanderer/Reilly - they don't intend to catch feelings, it's just practical, warm bodies keeping the cold off, isn't it?
  • Female Lone Wanderer/Sydney - wounds need patching after the shootout in the National Archives.
  • Amata Almodovar/Female Lone Wanderer - playmates to teen bffs to girlfriends...maybe Amata gets a little giddy when the Wanderer wins a fight against Butch?
  • Female Lone Wanderer/Sarah Lyons - how does the leader of the pride wind down after a hard fight with the Enclave?

Fallout: New Vegas

  • Corporal Betsy/Angela Williams - Betsy's always run a little hot and cold with the women in Camp McCarran, but since she started therapy for her trauma, things are settling down...maybe she finally asks Angela out on a date instead of trying to get in her lab coat, and maybe Angela finally agrees instead of turning her away?
  • Corporal Betsy/Female Courier - does a low karma Courier take Betsy up on her offer the first time they meet? Or does a high karma courier come back later when the dust has settled?
  • Female Courier/Ghost - two sharpshooters' paths collide at the Mojave checkpoint. Is it just a one-night thing?  Or will the courier make her way back after visiting New Vegas?
  • Female Courier/Julie Farkas - the Courier and Julie get matching tattoos.
  • Female Courier/Lacey - a familiar face arrives at the outpost but doesn't seem to recognise Lacey...
  • Ghost/Lacey - Ghost keeps to herself, Lacey tries to get her out of her shell with whiskey and a regular game of caravan.
  • Ghost/Rose of Sharon Cassidy - No nonsense Ghost and straight shooting Cass? Something tells me they'd rather pull out their own teeth than talk about matters of the heart...
  • Lacey/Rose of Sharon Cassidy - as Cass starts to chafe under the red tape keeping her in the Mojave outpost, she and Lacey butt heads.
  • Rose of Sharon Cassidy/Female Courier - Cass doesn't expect a stranger to help her fix the broken pieces of her past.
  • Rose of Sharon Cassidy/Sunny Smiles - talk about a grump/sunshine pairing!

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness

  • Janice/Lara Croft - something about a rebellious Lara and a bored Janice sharing a cigarette on a street corner is very intriguing...especially if it leads to a quiet corner somewhere.

Horizon

  • Aloy/Tilda van der Meer - this is one where it might run dub-con or unhealthy or duplicitous, and that is totally ok with me.
  • Alva/Beta - these two are so soft and sweet, I feel like Alva could really bring Beta out of her shell with gentle enthusiasm.

The Long Dark

  • Astrid Greenwood/Molly - Molly comes across a weak and weary Astrid in the snow, hauls her over her shoulder and takes her home to thaw out.

Voyager

  • Seven of Nine/Samantha Wildman - maybe Samantha helps Seven with her lessons in human behaviour and they grow close? Feel free to include Naomi in the background, as long as nothing unpleasant happens to her.
  • Borg Queen/Seven of Nine - this one has the potential to lean dub-con on account of the nature of the borg (vs the nature of humans), but that is not an issue for this specific pairing, and should your muse lean towards anything a little unusual, that will be fine too
  • Seven of Nine/B'Elanna Torres - scenes with them in the Jeffries tubes live in my head rent-free

Original Work

  • Spaceship Engineer/Passenger on that Spaceship - a wealthy passenger who bought her way onto the mission clashing with the grumpy engineer who earned her place with blood sweat and tears.
  • Scientist on a Space Mission/Other Scientist With A Radically Different Field of Expertise - I'd love a scenario where they are living on a ship or a space station with a mission to colonise a new planet. Maybe they keep meeting in the kitchen where they are forced to sit together. Maybe they will start sharing hot beverages while arguing over the conflicts between their relative areas of interest.
  • Starship Captain/Space Pirate - pirate boards the ship to find the captain is her ex-wife?
  • Queen/Lady-in-waiting (OW) - secret rendezvous, stolen kisses, and lots of plush fabric.
  • Queen Secretly in Love With Her Knight/Her Loyal Knight - Chivalry, armour, corsets. <3 Knight can be openly or secretly a woman (trans characters are fine)
  • Post-apoc city leader/Post-apoc city leader - feel free to go heavy on the post-apoc vibes!
  • Maiden Living in a Tower/Lady Knight Who Thinks She’s In Need of Rescuing - would love it if the maiden is a total asocial grump who hates being around people and has poor manners
  • Princess Imprisoned in Tower/Burglar Who Thinks Tower's Unoccupied and Breaks in To Rob It - would love it if the burglar is genuinely a criminal rather than a dashing rogue

For Original Works set in space, I prefer NASA-punk over Space-fantasy but feel free to hand-wave complex futuristic things like FTL for plot (or go into great detail if that's your thing!)

Thank you for whatever you choose to do. I hope you have fun creating.

LG 🖤

Dear Writer,

Thank you for participating in this exchange. It is my first time, I am very excited to receive your gift. I hope you get something you love in return. Firstly, I’m pretty easy osy, so though I've written some ideas for each fandom or pairing in my letter, please feel free to go in another direction if you want to. They are only there to help if you need inspiration. I read widely in fandom!

If you want to write an entirely epistolary story, please feel free.

DNW:

  • pwp, though mentions of and allusions to intimacy are just fine (I prefer M ratings to E)
  • pregnancy and pregnancy related themes
  • character bashing
  • a/b/o dynamics

General Likes:

  • For this exchange I would prefer canon or canon-adjacent/divergent settings rather than AUs
  • I enjoy dark fics, so dark themes are welcome apart from anything pregnancy related. MCD is fine, ditto angst, whump, H/C, etc
  • Fluff is also equally appreciated! As is humour, character study, pining (requited or otherwise)
  • For romantic pairings I’d prefer it to remain flirty/innuendo/mentions of or soft focus rather than detailed smut
  • For all the pairings except Lucy West & Family, Seven of Nine & Naomi Wildman, Rodney McKay & Jeannie Miller, or Dave Sheppard & John Sheppard, feel free to write either / or & (romance or friendship) if you wish even when I have specified otherwise. I picked one way or the other to fit all my nominations in, but the preferences are mild

STARGATE

Any & Any: this was the only pairing I nominated with a specific idea. I had the episode Letters from Pegasus (Stargate Atlantis) in mind here, especially the background characters whose video messages we never got to watch.

Dave Sheppard & John Sheppard: it would be nice to read one of them reaching out to the other after their father’s funeral.

John Sheppard & Samantha Carter: maybe Sam has some advice from John before the expedition leaves, when they first make contact with Earth again, or after Sam leaves Atlantis? Or maybe communications (official or otherwise) when Sam first arrives on Atlantis. Teething problems etc.

Rodney McKay/John Sheppard: one of my biggest ships. John writes to Rodney when he gets the parasite in his head. One of them is sent back to earth. Emails during the return. Go nuts!

Rodney McKay & Jeannie Miller: again, a reconnection might be nice, and/or letters they wrote each other when they weren’t talking. Both of them are very welcome to be angry and wrong.

Rodney McKay & Radek Zelenka: there is so much potential here. Arguing via email on Atlantis, disagreements in published papers, private emails discussing the wellbeing of the scientists in Atlantis, maybe Radek tries to comfort Rodney after the death of Drs Gall and Abrams or after Doranda?

Ronon Dex/Teyla Emmagan/Rodney McKay/John Sheppard: they could have a private chat on an Atlantis intranet etc, or maybe you could write a mission report from each of them that paints a different picture of a mission?

Teyla Emmagan/Elizabeth Weir: maybe Teyla writes Elizabeth a letter after she is lost to the replicators or adrift in space?

Vala Mal Doran & George Hammond: I know they missed each other in canon, but if you fudge the timeline a little there’s a lot of potential for comedy and/or genuine affection here.

Vala Mal Doran & none: I can only imagine the things Vala would write or record during her first few months at the SGC...I’m thinking she gets a hold of a vidcam and starts “documenting” things that frustrate Daniel Jackson to the end of his rope!

FALLOUT 3

Butch DeLoria & Female Lone Wanderer: during their time in the vault or after, maybe the FLW encourages his affinity for hair styling, maybe he apologises for being a jerk in a roundabout way?

Moira Brown/Female Lone Wanderer: perhaps moira keeps more extensive notes on the FLW during their research for the wasteland survivial guide? Or maybe the FLW sends letters back to her on her travels.

Mr Burke/Female Lone Wanderer: canonically he sends her some very intense letters. Maybe you could expand on them? Maybe she sends some back? Affirming or rebuking.

Lucy West & Family: the Lone Wanderer takes Lucy’s letters to her family in Arefu. Maybe you’d be interested in writing them? I’m particularly interested in her observations of the people in Moriarty’s Saloon.

Female Lone Wanderer/Nova: I always imagine the FLW to be a little dazzled by Nova’s personality and profession. Maybe she spends the night with her and leaves her a letter in the morning when she leaves? Or maybe they write to each other a lot.

Bittercup/Female Lone Wanderer: I like to think that the FLW brings Bittercup some joy somehow!

Amata Almodovar & Female Lone Wanderer: whenever I play Fallout 3 I always imagine the FLW misses her best friend so much, especially when she finds out just how lonely and inhospitable the wasteland is compared to the boring safety of the vault. Exciting, but dangerous.

FALLOUT NEW VEGAS

Craig Boone/Female Courier: I ship these two hard. The Courier having lost all sense of who she is, Boone having lost all sense of who he was. Maybe they tentatively build a romantic relationship as the Courier travels that comes to something after the events at Hoover Dam?

Rose of Sharon Cassidy/Female Courier: maybe Cass returns to the caravan business, and she and the Courier leave letters for each other at the Mojave Outpost whenever they pass through?

Female Courier/Veronica Santangelo: maybe Veronica keeps records of her travels with the Courier that she keeps for posterity?

Female Courier/Ulysses: things change for both of them after the events of the divide. There’s a lot to unpack between them if Ulysses survives, otherwise maybe the Courier has a few things she wishes she could have said.

Female Courier/Sunny Smiles: Sunny was the first person to show the Courier the ropes when she woke up after being shot in the head. Perhaps they become fast friends and keep in touch, with the potential for a romance to bloom?

STAR TREK VOYAGER

Seven of Nine & Naomi Wildman: Seven and Naomi’s relationship is fundamental to me in understanding her growth as a human post liberation from the Borg. Maybe Naomi initiates a correspondence as a kid that lasts even until the events of Picard? Or maybe Seven creates a series of lessons for Naomi when she wants to become the captrain’s assistant?

Kathryn Janeway & Seven of Nine: I imagine them keeping in touch after Voyager gets back to Earth.

Seven of Nine/B’Elanna Torres: enemies to lovers. ^^ Snippy written communications?

Seven of Nine & Kes: they don’t really meet in canon, so maybe Seven is haunted by the hole left behind after she starts to become a part of the crew? Perhaps Janeway suggest she documents her experiences, and she records things as letters to Kes, a woman she wil never know but with whom she shares a lot.

SKYRIM

Cicero & Listener: Cicero’s journals are something else. You could expand on the theme of falling into paranoia and have Cicero write half-finished letters to the Listener that get darker every time?

Cicero & The Night Mother: Cicero tries to communicate with the Night Mother through letters that he burns at her sarcophagus when his attempts at verbal communication fail.

ORIGINAL WORKS

Astronaut Trapped in Derelict Space Station & None (OW): I am absolutely enamoured with stories where someone is lost and alone in space. Maybe they document their daily life for posterity, maybe they write letters for everyone they miss, maybe they are rescued, maybe not.

Post-Apocalypse Survivor & Other Survivors: something that jumped into my head when I saw this pairing was someone leaving notes for other people to find, a one way communication where to get supplies, pass by a hazard safely, places to avoid etc. Something about the human spirit enduring through hard times.

Thank you for whatever you choose to do. I hope you have fun creating.

LG 🖤

Something More than a Friend by portlandwithyou

Click here to give this a go!

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 20: A random character shows up at your doorstep at dinnertime saying a friend sent them.  Why did your friend send that person, how does it go, and what do you talk about?

Well, anyone that knows anything about my fannish life would send Rodney McKay my way, because they know how much I adore him.

I would feed him spaghetti and meatballs, and we would talk about our partners and grumble about our childhoods and stay up all night watching films and complaining about the bad science. In the morning we'd go somewhere for coffee and bagels and then part ways with an awkward hug. :)

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 19: What is something that you associate with a character in fandom, but aren't sure if it's canon or fandom?

Is Dr Parrish's name really David? I can't find mention of it on the wiki or in the episode scripts. If not, who came up with it? I'd like to thank them. It's perfect.
logicgunn: (Default)
Day 18: Recall a time when two of your fandoms collided, at least in some way.  For example, a song that you fell in love with from one fandom showed up in a second fandom.

Every single time Red Right Hand by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is played on anything it immediately rushes me back to my first time watching the X Files Episode "Ascension" where Duane Barry is driving with Scully in the boot of his car. It's one of my top 10 TV/Film moments of all time and it gives literal chills, so whenever I hear this song I get goosebumps.

It's not technically a fandom for me, but I can remember the first time I heard that song out of the contect of The X Files - my first viewing of Scream. It plays during the curfew montage. (I have a secret and shameful love for the Scream films.)

Also, I hadn't listened to it for a while so you can imagine how utterly floored I was when Peaky Blinders started airing! Haven't watched the show at all though.

Fun Fact - this the the number one song on my Serial Killer WIP playlist. ^^

I should also add that watching SG1 and having John de Lancie show up was wonderful (he's Q on TNG) and also Robert Picardo in SG1 and SGA (The Doctor in STV).

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 17: Do you prefer art, fic, or vids?  Why?  Bonus: If someone was to give you a fandom gift, what format would it be?

I don't have the aptitude or the skill to create art or a vid, so if we're talking about something I've made then it has to be a fic.

When it comes to gifts, I honestly don't have a preference. I have a handful of fics gifted to me (birthday presents and responses to my prompts) and a wonderful desktop wallpaper that's cycled onto my monitor on the regular, and a podfic of one of my first fics which blew my mind. Anything that someone has made with either me or one of my fics in mind is a marvel and I absolutely treasure them.

That said, I sincerely hope my wife writes another fic for my birthday this year. <3

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 16: Do you have a fandom that you follow - either regularly or casually - with little to no knowledge of canon?

Not yet! I'm slowly being sucked into the Due South fandom, but I'm still resisting. I watched it back in the day but I can barely remember a thing other than the fact that I loved it.

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 15: What fandom pairing took you over like Venom took over Eddie?

McShep for sure.

I've enjoyed many ships over my fandom life, but none have hit me so damn hard as John and Rodney. It feels utterly criminal to me that they didn't explore it in canon, and usually I'm easyosy about what does and doesn't happen in fiction. Maybe the creators were going for a BFF thing, maybe, but it sure seems like JF and DH played it romantically. Sometimes it's kind of inconsistent, like certain writers/directors were pro-McShep and others were anti-McShep, and I switch from "is this queerbaiting?" to "is this queer-coding?" so fast sometimes I get whiplash.

And then there was that ending.

Look, I adore Jennifer, absolutely adore her. Her youthful vigour was a fantastic addition to the show. But the delicious chemistry she had with Ronon lit the screen on fire, so to dump that and push her to Rodney (IIRC so that "the geek gets the girl for once") made me squick a little bit. DH and JS have some really good scenes together, but they don't have much in the way of sexual chemistry. It feels so familial and not something that's going to end up in tangled sheets (which is actually the same way I feel about John and Teyla).
logicgunn: (Default)
Day 14: What fandom broke your heart?

TBH none. I tend to roll with the punches and if canon goes in a direction I don't like? Well there are always fanfics.

There are fandom-adjacent things that have upset me, but they're mostly about people being dicks IRL and I try not to dwell on it.

logicgunn: (Default)

Day 13: Squicks - What are some things that squick you in fandom - not necessarily "icky", though it can be. From anything involving blood, to bad grammar.

When it comes to the rules of the English language I'm a very forgiving reader, so if your fics are littered with spelling/grammar errors and overused phrases and Americanisms when it should be Britishisms or vice versa I'm not going to complain and it very likely won't ruin my enjoyment too much, even if/when they're kind of jarring. It certainly won't stop me from leaving kudos.

(My policy is if I finish a fic, I leave kudos. If I really don't like it, then I won't finish it.)

Others have mentioned epithets as a squick and I totally get that. I find them confusing, especially when they are used frequently within a body of dialogue. I won't automatically stop reading, but I'll probably have to go slower and/or reread so I can keep track of who's saying/doing what because they don't assign the character to me as easily as a name would and so they alter the flow of the story. I have read a couple of fics where there were so many epithets I just couldn't finish them because I couldn't keep up and it wasn't worth the effort.

On that topic, you really can't overuse character's names in a fic - they become background in the same way all the commonly used words do (the, and, it, when, etc) - so if you're using epithets to avoid that I'd gently encourage you not to do that.

Something I actively dislike is when characters use pet names that are OOC. There are exceptions where a writer has altered the characterisations in their AU enough that it works (without pushing too far into OOC territory), but those are few and far between.

Please don't change the POV within a paragraph. At the very least you need a new paragraph, but ideally, you need a new scene after a line break.

Some of the older fics I've read on AO3 and LiveJournal don't have paragraph breaks. A wall of text is really hard to read, but thankfully it seems like that kind of formatting issue has gone the way of the dinosaurs.

I don't have any trope squicks. I'll read just about any McShep fics with no exceptions (as long as it is a McShep fic and not, you know, a fic where John and Rodney are necking briefly in the background of another ship's fic). Ditto other SGA/SG1 pairings when I'm in the mood to read them. Some of the best fics I've read have had tropes that I'm not all that hyped about, and just because a fic has one of my favourite tropes it doesn't automatically mean I'm going to enjoy it.

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 12: Who is someone that you share the most fandoms with?

To be honest, I'm not in a lot of fandoms, but whenever I get into something I share it with my wife until she falls down the rabbit hole too. :)

She resisted SGA until I started writing fics, now she writes me a McShep on my birthday. <3 If that isn't true love, I don't know what is!

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 11: What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

I actually left fandom in general for years after the FFN Purge of 2002, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The less said about that the better.

In terms of a single fandom, drama and hostility will stop me getting involved with the social side of being in a fandom, but I'm perfectly capable of enjoying something without actually interacting with anyone else, and have done that before when I've enjoyed something but the fans were constantly flinging shit at each other. It's lonely, but I'm just not willing to watch people harass and bully others over an opinion or a ship.

There is enough room in the fandom ocean for all the ships.

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 10: Drop your OTP or small ensemble from the fandom they're in into another fandom - how do they do?

I'm going to cheat this one because I've already done it.

I dropped John and Rodney into a video game called The Long Dark by Hinterland Studios. It's a Canadian post-apocalyptic survival game where the two main characters crash their plane during an EMP storm and have to survive on a wintry island.

John is transporting a snarky Canadian scientist from Resolute in Nunavut to Thule Airbase in Greenland when the Aurora Borealis lights up the sky and an unseen force overloads the chopper and causes them to crash. They're split up when they land and have to find eachother, then survive and try to find a way to get rescued. It's a bit of a fluff fest with a little angst. Between them they have the skills to survive and 90% of the story is John and Rodney falling in love.

The Long Dark on AO3.
logicgunn: (Default)
Day 9: Drop the cast of a fandom you follow into a reality tv show - who/what/why?

I wrote a whole thing and it's kind of long but I loved it so I posted it on AO3 and Tumblr.
logicgunn: (Default)
Day 8: Crack!fic - We all know it. What's your opinion of it, and if you want, show us an example.

Crack fic is the backbone of fandom, because it allows us to read/write anything and everything and explore even the most Dalí-esque ideas that our brain comes up with in that hazy faling-asleep fog at stupid o'clock in the morning where the only rules are the dream rules that can change on a whim.

I have written precicely 1 (one) crack fic, and that's an absolute crime against humanity and will be rectified just as soon as I get a good idea (or, you know, the next time I drink a zinfandel).

logicgunn: (Default)
Day 7: What's the longest time you've been in a fandom. Not necessarily your oldest fandom, but a fandom that you started and still continue to read/write/create content for in some way.

I've been a sporadic reader/lurker in the HP fandom for something like 22 years, so I guess that takes the cookie?

But I've been a writer in the SGA fandom for 2 years and seven days, plus another year or so when I jumped headfirst into the McShep fic and returned to reading fanfiction in a big way. :)
logicgunn: (Default)
Day 6: What's a fandom that you wish had a bigger following?

You know, I've been in a couple of mega fandoms back when the source material was shit hot, but these days I'm in a post-craze fandom and I much prefer that.

I'm not sorry to have missed all the SGA wank (cause the absolute dumpster fire that came with TXF and HP fandoms was a nightmare) and TBH I get a lot more out of the small community than I ever could out of the bigger ones I was drowned in.

So while more people would be cool, and I'm always thrilled to see new people on Tumblr and sharing fics on AO3, I'm happy with my fandom it as is.
logicgunn: (Default)
Day 5: Compare and/or contrast your very first fandom obsession and your latest fandom obsession.

There are two parts to my fandom history. The before days when I was very young and into bad boys and smart, competent women, and the now days when I'm into (ahem) complexity and scope, with a very large gap in between when I was absolutely a fan, but very much apart from fandom.

THEN

My first ever fandom obsession was The X Files, and I was definitely too young to watch that show but my mum had a videotape of the Duane Barry/Ascension/One Breath arc and when I confessed to watching it in secret she let me watch it on TV. I was mad about both Scully and Mulder (together and with others) for over a decade, spent my (very limited) pocket money on any magazine that had the show or the characters or the actors in it, and when I got my first paying job I bought the video collections of all the series one by one. I stepped my toes into fandom; chatted on forums and read fics and joined mailing groups and discovered FFN, and it was glorious.

And then the great FFN 2002 purge happened, deleting not just the smut but all the (fem)slash with it because everyone slapped an NC17 rating on anything even remotely queer. To say I was distraught would be an understatement, but I was a teen. So...

This traumatic event (because seriously, FUCK YOU FFN) coincided with the burgeoning relationship between my wife and I, so I got distracted and pulled out of fandom so fast I'm pretty sure I had whiplash. I dipped my toes into reading Snape-centric HP fics on and off, but for most of the rest of the next 15 or so years, I was too disillusioned with fandom and too distracted by life to step into any kind of fannish space.

NOW

And then I discovered SGA.

I fell hard and fast onto the Rodney/John wagon early in season 1 and I started wondering was it just me? Or did other people ship them too? So I looked it up and not only did people totally ship them, there were over 600 pages of fics dedicated to their relationship on a fan-made archive called AO3.

Mind. Blown.

I missed a lot of happenings in those 15 years. With all that time between fandoms, my feelings and interests were different. I mean, as a teen I mostly dug smut, right? But as an adult I wanted something more from my fandom. I wanted angst and H/C and AUs (and yes, smut), but I also wanted complexity and scope and it wasn't enough to just read other people's ideas, oh no, I had to go and get some of my own. And those ideas screamed to be written down.

So I dipped my toes into the writing thing, then I dipped my toes in the sharing thing, and even though I was convinced that posting my first fic would either drag me into a fandom war or doom me to another purge, the world didn't end. I honestly think people are just a lot less argumentative than they were when I was in the XF and HP fandoms. Maybe we're all old and jaded, maybe we're just tired. It almost certainly helps that SGA finished airing years before I even watched it, nevermind looked for the fandom.

(Secretly, I think that having a reliable archive helps too.)

It all couldn't be more different this time around, and now I've written and shared something like 50 fics, which isn't something I ever thought I'd do because I fucking hated creative writing as a kid. I would never have posted anything I wrote back then - and we can all be thankful that my teenage scribblings aren't lurking in a damp, dark corner of the internet.
